Google+ Cave Food Kitchen: Product Review: Low Carb Bread (Lavkarbobrød)

Product Review: Low Carb Bread (Lavkarbobrød)

For a while, I made my own low carb/Paleo bread, but lost interest since I had so many other things to choose from, that I didn't want to invest my time in baking bread anymore (sounds almost arrogant)
But I was intrigued when I ran across a Norwegian company that makes low carb products, and one of their products is a low carb bread mix. I do always get skeptical when it claims; "just add water!", but hey, let's give it a go anyway.

The label looks promising; only 1g of carbs per slice! Gluten free!
Excellent! Since a normal slice of bread holds about 17g, this is a great substitute.
Let's have a look at the ingredients:

For a product that is "created" to be low in carbs, the ingredients actually don't scare me, and after researching E450 & E500, I wasn't too worried about them either. That's just the shitty thing in Europe, because of the numbers it sounds more chemical than it really is. The word FiberFine sounds like a brand, but I'm not really sure. Either way, read more about resistant starch here.
However, if you are looking for a Paleo bread, this isn't it. If you are strict Paleo, that is. Peas are not considered Paleo. This is the nutrion info: (compared to regular bread)

The package included a bag with the mix and an aluminum loaf pan. Add 300ml water (3 cups) of water, mix and scoop it into the loaf pan. Bake for 70 mins (!) on 175 Celsius, done. The result:

It definitely looks like a bread! It rises very evenly in the oven and smells delicious. But does it taste good? Well, in my humble opinion, this stuff is amazing! The seeds give it a great crunch and wholesome flavor, I was very surprised that such a simple product (to make) can taste this fantastic! If you are looking for big slices in terms of size, it might be not what you expect, but the flavor & texture make you think you are eating regular bread. Only downside: the price. For 1 box (so 1 bread) I payed €6,95 (about $8,50) so that's pretty steep for a loaf of bread...

The 1g carb count is for a slice of 40g, in the picture on the right I cut a thin slice that weighed 32g, so the numbers make sense and are realistic.

To summarize:
This is a fantastic tasting bread, perfect for people that want to eat low carb and not give up their sandwiches. The only reason why I won't eat it often, is it's price.
