Google+ Cave Food Kitchen: Product Review: Questbar

Product Review: Questbar

One of the products I really wanted to try were Questbars. Had them on my wishlist for months, and finally a friend was able to bring over some the other day. Since I am a chocoholic, I ordered a box of the chocolate brownie, and  from the All Natural line 2 flavors to try as well.

Chocolate Brownie
Much chewier than expected, the texture actually reminded me a little of the power bar, the "sports supplement" loaded with sugars and possibly designed to even survive a nuclear war. Ok, it wasn't that chewy, but you get the idea. What surprised me more was the unusual salty-licorice chocolate taste. I actually don't how to describe it otherwise, but it certainly caught me off guard. Perhaps after eating low carb for such a long time, my sweet taste is simply out of practice. At the same time I discovered an aftertaste that brought up vague memories, and after looking at the label, I knew why.
The label reads the following:

Wait, Lo Han Guo?? What is that?? Dish #14 at your local restaurant? No.

After looking it up, it made more sense; it is natural a low calorie sweetener, 300 times more sweet than sugar and it claims not to affect your blood sugar levels.

And for some reason, me & natural low calorie sweeteners just don't go together. You can ask Stevia, it wasn't a good relationship and we decided it was better to go our separate ways.

So, what is the verdict? Hmmm, what can I say, my hopes were perhaps a bit too high for this one, but maybe I have to get used to the taste a bit. On the other hand, the numbers are looking really good for a low carb bar; 1g of sugar and 20g of protein is a pretty darn good combination.
Just start with 1 bar to try though.

Cinnamon Roll
Part of the All Natural line, and after the first bite, I immediately wonder why the Chocolate Brownie is not in it. The taste is rather sweet, but doesn't have that strange taste that was so evident in the Chocolate Brownie. Ingredients look pretty much the same:

Funny enough this bar tastes better, even though it has Stevia in it, but that's my personal opinion.
Verdict: very sweet taste and not for every day, but would eat it again.

Coconut Cashew
Highly anticipated, because I LOVE cashews & coconut. If you are strict paleo though, this is one to skip, since cashews aren't considered paleo (although opinions differ on that one) On that note, whey isn't considered paleo either, so what am I trying to point out anyway?
Ok, back on the product. It for sure smells like coconut and luckily it tastes like it too, reminding me a little of the taste of a Bounty (perhaps wishful thinking) Again quite sweet, but I am pretty sure i just experience sweet tastes stronger these days.
The cashew texture is in the after-taste, and you actually chew on desiccated coconut, yay!
Same thing on the ingredients:

Still though, that stevia.... Cannot help but wonder what they would taste like without it.

To wrap it up (don't mind the pun) Quest bars are probably one the most natural protein bars out there. With an average of 10-12 ingredients it is almost a miracle these days! Packing 20 grams of protein, and 1-2 grams of sugar, it is also a low carb dream.
One important note; sugar alcohols are processed differently per person. If you you are in ketosis, they could possibly kick you off, it is simply a matter of testing.

  1. Quest bars are expensive and somewhat of an “acquired taste,” but they’re probably the healthiest bars on the market. +1
